Frank burst into the room like a thundercloud, his face white as a sheet and his eyes wild with something I had never seen before.
He did not run to me.
He did not kiss my forehead or reach for our babies.
He stood at the foot of my bed, breathing hard, staring at the five little bundles as if they were something dangerous.
“What are these?” he demanded, his voice cracking.
I could barely feel my own lips move.
“They’re your children, Frank,” I whispered. “Five babies. I swear to you, they are yours.”
He shook his head and let out a bitter, ugly laugh that made the nurses step back.
“Don’t you lie to me, Clara,” he said, loud enough for the whole floor to hear. “Look at them. Look at you. You have shamed me in front of this entire town.”
