I scanned the property quickly, the way I had been trained. No lights on inside. No cars in the driveway. No signs of life anywhere. The stillness felt unnatural, like the quiet before a terrible storm.
Emily reached into the pocket of her denim overalls and pulled out a small silver key. Her hands were trembling so badly she could barely hold it.
She turned to face me, and for the first time, I saw real fear break through that steady mask. Her lip quivered, and her voice came out in a serious tone, as if she were about to reveal a forbidden secret.
“Promise me you won’t let him take me back,” she whispered.
My throat closed up. In that instant, I would have promised her the moon and the stars if it would take away even a sliver of her fear.
“I promise,” I answered without a single second of hesitation.
She looked into my eyes for a long moment, searching for truth. I must have passed the test, because she nodded once and turned back toward the door.
Then she slid the key into the lock.
The click was so loud in the silence it made me flinch.
She turned the key.
The door creaked open.
A heavy silence enveloped us.
Something inside that house was about to come to light.
