Hannah looked up at her and whispered, her voice broken, ‘Please, Mommy, I’m sorry.’
I could not move. I could not breathe. I could not believe what I was seeing.
The woman who was supposed to love my daughter like her own was standing over her like a bully, and my little girl was begging for mercy.
Then something inside me snapped.
I shouted, ‘ENOUGH!’
My voice echoed through that kitchen like thunder. Melissa spun around, and for the first time in my life, I saw fear in her eyes. Not the fear of a concerned mother. The fear of someone who had been caught.
I stepped forward, my whole body shaking with anger and grief. I knelt down beside Hannah and lifted her gently into my arms, milk and all. Luke was still clinging to her, so I wrapped my arms around both of them. I could feel Hannah’s little heart pounding against my chest.
