Laura would just lower her eyes and say nothing.
She was too weak to fight back.
I did not know how bad it had become.
I was at work most days, trying to keep our lives together.
I thought Barbara was helping with Henry.
I thought Laura was getting the rest she needed.
But the baby monitors mysteriously stopped working whenever I was gone.
Sometimes the Wi-Fi would go down.
Sometimes the nursery camera would simply show a black screen.
At first, I thought it was just old wiring.
Then I began to notice a pattern.
The outages only happened when I left the house.
When I came home, everything would work again.
Barbara would always have an explanation.
“The internet has been so unreliable lately,” she would say.
“You should call the company and complain.”
I never saw her touch the router.
I never saw her unplug anything.
But I knew something was deeply wrong.
What Barbara never understood was that I trusted evidence more than excuses.
