I never thought love could demand such a heavy toll. When I met Harold Bennett at the University of Wisconsin in the fall of 1983, he was the kind of man who carried my books without being asked and laughed like the world was not so frightening after all.

We were young, broke, and absolutely certain that our love could outlast any storm. We married in a small chapel in Madison, Wisconsin, with forty guests and a cake that my mother baked herself.
