I didn’t hear it.
Nobody heard it.
But we saw the result.
The mistress went entirely rigid.
Her crying cut off instantly.
Her eyes went wide behind her dark sunglasses, she lifted her face, and she stared at my mom as if she had just received a terrible verdict.
“No…” she muttered.
Mom didn’t reply.
The woman grabbed her purse, stumbled toward the exit, and nearly tripped over a standing floral wreath.
Outside, we heard her car engine roar as she tore out of the parking lot.
The entire funeral home fell into dead silence.
Mom walked back to her chair, picked up her glass of water, and smoothed her skirt.
I leaned in close to her.
“Mom, what on earth did you say to her?”
She took a sip.
“That the life insurance policy wasn’t for her.”
I felt a pit drop into my stomach.
“What insurance policy?”
Mom looked at me for the first time all afternoon.
“The $2,000
