On December 20th, the house was almost empty. The living room echoed when we walked. The windows looked bigger without curtains, the walls bare without the family photos I’d taken down. I stood in the middle of the floor and remembered the Christmas Eve when I had stood in this exact spot, exhausted, while seventeen relatives watched a movie and one of the children spilled soda on the sofa. No one had moved. No one had offered a napkin. I had cleaned it up, alone, at midnight.
