“Daddy… Mommy’s boyfriend hit me with a baseball bat. He said if I cry, it’ll hurt more…”

My four-year-old son, Mason, called me while I was at work, his tiny voice trembling over the phone.

“Daddy… please, come home.”

I was in a budget meeting on the fourteenth floor of a glass building in downtown Austin when my phone began to vibrate against the conference table.

At first, I ignored it.

Those meetings rarely allowed for interruptions, and I had already been warned about my focus slipping.

But when it rang again seconds later, a tightness seized me before I even looked at the screen.

Mason knew not to call me during work… unless something terrible was happening.

I answered immediately.

“Hey, champ… what’s going on?”

At first, there were only soft, broken sobs.

Then came his voice, fragile and terrified.

“Daddy… please, come home.”

My chair crashed against the wall as I stood up.

“Mason? What happened? Where is your mom?”

“She’s not here,” he whispered. “Mommy’s boyfriend… Brett… hit me with a baseball bat. My arm hurts so much… He said if I cry, it’ll hurt more.”

Every word landed like a punch to my chest.

I could barely breathe.

I could see his face in my mind, his little cheeks wet, his small hand pressing the phone to his ear.

Then a furious male voice shouted in the background.

“Who are you calling? Give me that phone!”

The call cut off.

For an instant, everything around me fell into silence.

The numbers on the spreadsheet in front of me blurred.

My hands were shaking so hard I nearly dropped my keys.

I was twenty minutes away, trapped in downtown traffic, and my little boy was alone with someone who had just hurt him.

I ran toward the elevator and dialed the only person I knew could get there faster.

My older brother, Colt, answered right away.

“What’s going on?”

“Mason just called,” I said, out of breath. “Tara’s boyfriend hit him with a baseball bat. I’m twenty minutes away. Where are you?”

There was a brief pause.

Colt used to compete professionally in regional MMA tournaments before a shoulder injury ended his career.

I hadn’t heard that tone in his voice since then.

It was calm, low, and deeply dangerous.

“I’m about fifteen minutes from your house,” he said in a low voice. “Do you want me to go in?”

“Go. Right now,” I said without hesitation. “I’m calling the police.”

“I’m on my way.”

The elevator felt unbearably slow.

I could hear the hum of the cables, the soft ding of each floor passing.

My chest was tight, and my pulse pounded in my ears.

As soon as the doors opened, I ran to the parking lot, already on the phone with emergency services.

Yes, my son is in danger.

Yes, an adult male is threatening him.

No, I cannot wait.

The dispatcher kept asking me questions, and I answered as fast as I could.

I told them my address.

I told them about Brett.

I told them about the baseball bat.

I told them my son was only four years old.

Traffic moved at a snail’s pace through the financial district; every red light felt like a barrier between my son and me.

I honked my horn, swerving around cars, focused on only one thing: getting home.

My tires screeched as I turned onto the access road.

A man in a silver sedan yelled at me through his window, but I didn’t care.

Nothing mattered except Mason.

Then my phone rang again.

Colt.

“I’m two blocks away,” he said. “Don’t hang up.”

“Go,” I begged him.

I don’t remember how many lights I ran or how many cars I overtook.

I only remember my breathing—heavy, irregular—and the image of Mason, small and in pain, hiding somewhere in the house, trying not to cry because he had been threatened.

The thought of him alone made my vision narrow.

I could feel the steering wheel creak under my grip.

Colt stayed on the phone.

I could hear the faint roar of his truck and, occasionally, his calm, steady voice.

“I just turned onto your street.”

I gripped the steering wheel until my hands ached.

“The police are on the way.”

“Good.”

“Colt…”

I didn’t know how to finish the sentence.

Did I want him to protect my son… or to deal with the man who had hurt him?

He understood both.

“I’ll get the boy out first,” he said. “Then I’ll deal with him.”

The way he said it made my stomach drop and my heart race at the same time.

I had seen Colt fight before, back when he was younger and faster.

I knew what he was capable of when someone threatened our family.

The call remained open as I heard the screech of his brakes.

A car door slammed.

Footsteps moved quickly up the gravel path.

Then… silence.

A silence more terrifying than any scream.

“Colt,” I said with a trembling voice. “Colt, answer me…”

There was no response.

My pulse thundered in my ears.

I could hear something faint in the background—maybe a television, maybe Brett’s voice—but I couldn’t tell.

Then I heard it: a loud, heavy thud… as if the front door had been kicked open.

The sound exploded through the phone speaker.

I imagined the door splintering, the noise echoing through our hallway.

I imagined Brett turning around in shock.

I imagined Mason somewhere in the house, terrified and hurting.

“Colt…” I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

The line stayed open.

All I could hear was breathing.

Deep, controlled, dangerous breathing.

And then another sound—footsteps moving fast across the floor.

I pressed the phone harder against my ear.

“Colt, talk to me.”

Nothing.

My car shot forward as the light finally turned green.

I was still fifteen minutes out.

Fifteen minutes felt like an entire lifetime.

I could see the house in my mind, the one Tara and I had bought before Mason was born.

The one where we had painted his nursery blue.

The one where he took his first steps in the living room.

The one where Brett now slept under the same roof as my son.

I had hated that from the moment Tara told me about him.

She said Brett was good with Mason.

She said he was patient.

She said I was overreacting.

But I had seen the way Brett looked at my son sometimes, like he was an inconvenience.

I had told Tara it made me uncomfortable.

She told me I was jealous.

She told me I needed to let go.

Now my son was hurt, and I was stuck in traffic.

I slammed my palm against the steering wheel.

“Come on,” I shouted at the cars ahead of me.

My horn blared.

A woman on the sidewalk looked up, startled.

I didn’t care.

The dispatcher was still on the other line, asking if I was okay.

I told them to hurry.

I told them my brother was already at the house.

I told them to send an ambulance too.

My voice cracked.

I didn’t know if Mason was conscious.

I didn’t know if Brett had hit him again.

I didn’t know if Colt had reached him in time.

The uncertainty was worse than anything I had ever felt.

I had spent my entire life believing I could protect my son.

And now I was too far away.

The phone speaker crackled.

I could still hear movement.

Then a voice—Brett’s voice—shouted something I couldn’t understand.

It was angry and loud.

Then another voice—Colt’s voice—said something low and cold.

I couldn’t make out the words.

But I knew that voice.

It was the voice he used right before something broke.

A shiver ran down my spine.

“Colt,” I yelled into the phone. “Answer me!”

Still nothing.

My chest heaved as I swerved onto the highway access road.

The traffic was thinner there, and I pressed the accelerator to the floor.

The engine roared.

Buildings blurred past my windows.

I kept one hand on the wheel and one eye on the phone screen, praying for an update.

Nothing.

The call was live, but no one was speaking to me.

I could hear the sound of something falling over.

Then a crash.

Then a man groaning.

It sounded like Brett.

I couldn’t be sure.

My heart pounded so hard I thought it might burst.

“Colt!”

Nothing.

The dispatcher asked me again for my location.

I gave it to them.

I was maybe ten minutes away now.

Ten minutes.

I could feel tears stinging my eyes, but I refused to blink.

I thought about Mason’s favorite blanket, the one with the little yellow ducks.

I thought about how he always asked me to check under his bed for monsters.

I thought about how I had taught him to call me if he ever felt unsafe.

He had called me.

He had done everything right.

And I wasn’t there.

The guilt was a physical weight on my chest.

I pushed it down.

There would be time for guilt later.

Right now, I had to get home.

I took the exit too fast, and my tires screamed against the pavement.

A red light ahead.

I ran it.

A car horn blared to my right, but I didn’t stop.

I could see the familiar streets now, the corner store, the old oak tree, the row of houses with their small front yards.

I was close.

So close.

The phone crackled again.

This time I heard something new.

A small voice.

Mason.

He was crying.

“Daddy…”

The sound of my son’s voice broke something inside me.

“Mason! I’m here! I’m almost home!”

But he couldn’t hear me.

The line was still open, but he must have been too far from the phone.

I heard Colt’s voice, softer now.

“It’s okay, buddy. I got you.”

He was talking to Mason.

He had gotten to him.

Relief flooded through me, but only for a second.

Because then I heard Brett scream.

It was a raw, furious sound, full of pain and rage.

Then a heavy thud.

Then silence again.

I pulled onto my street.

My headlights swept across the front yard.

I could see Colt’s truck parked at an angle near the curb.

The front door was wide open.

A lamp lay on its side inside the entryway.

I threw the car into park and ran.

But I never dropped the phone.

I could hear Colt breathing.

“I’m here,” I said. “I’m walking in now.”

For a long second, no one replied.

Then Colt’s voice came through, steady and calm.

“Stay on the line.”

And that’s when I stepped through the doorway.
