My parents drove away with my sister Jessica’s children while my six-year-old daughter Ava stood in the rain.

I sent one final message to my parents and my sister.

I wrote:

“After what you did to my daughter, every payment is stopping immediately. The mortgage. The cars. The tuition. All of it. You will have to take care of yourselves from now on. Do not contact me or Ava again.”

I didn’t wait for a response.

I didn’t want one.

Then I turned off my phone.

I looked over at Ava.

She was playing with a small toy in the back seat.
