My husband had barely pulled out of the driveway when my six-year-old daughter stepped into the kitchen and whispered as if she were carrying a grenade about to explode.

He stopped laughing.
The other man appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

Cole didn’t answer.
The man took a step onto the stairs.
“Cole?”
I heard the creak of the bottom step.

The man was coming up.
“Don’t come any closer,” I called out, my voice cracking.
The footsteps stopped.
“I’ve got a knife at your partner’s throat,” I said. “And I’ve already called the police.”
That last part was a lie, but I needed time.
My phone was still in my purse, and I had no idea if I even had service.
But the man didn’t know that.
For a long moment, the house was silent.
Then Cole spoke.
“She’s bluffing.”
“Am I?” I pressed the knife harder, and this time I felt the skin break.
A thin line of blood ran down his neck and disappeared into the collar of his shirt.
Cole’s breath caught.
He wasn’t smiling anymore.
“Tell him to leave,” I said. “Tell him to walk out the front door and keep walking, or I swear to God I’ll open you up right here.”
Cole’s body tensed.
I could feel the war going on inside him.
The man on the stairs didn’t move.
