The clock on the wall of Hillbrook State Penitentiary struck exactly 6:00 a.m. when the heavy iron door of cell block D finally slid open.

Daniel Hartley had been waiting for this day for five long, suffocating years.

The guards lunged forward.

Officer Haskins grabbed Daniel by the shoulder and tried to pull him away from the child.
