I had been on my feet since 5:00 a.m. preparing my in-laws’ Christmas dinner.

My back throbbed from the weight of my seven-month pregnancy, and every step sent a sharp pain down my spine.

And if she is bleeding on your floor, you will give me your address immediately, or I will have every federal agent in Ohio at your door within the hour.”

James’s face drained of all color.

His hand began to shake.

“W-what?”

“The address,” the voice said again, lower now. “Now.”

James stammered out the address, his eyes wide with terror.

Then he dropped the phone as if it had burned him.

He looked at me, then at Cynthia, who stood frozen in the doorway, her hand over her mouth.

“You… you told me you had no family,” James whispered.

“I never told you I was an orphan,” I said quietly. “You assumed. And you were happy with that assumption because it made me easier to control.”

Cynthia stepped forward, her voice shaking.

“This is a misunderstanding. We love Rebecca. We didn’t mean—”

“Didn’t mean to what?” I asked, struggling to sit up against the cabinet. “Push a pregnant woman into a counter? Refuse to call an ambulance? Smash her phone? Threaten to have her committed?”

James dropped to his knees, his expensive suit soaking up my blood.

“Please, Rebecca. Don’t do this. I can fix this.”

“You can’t fix this,” I said. “You can’t fix anything.”

Within fifteen minutes, three police cruisers and an ambulance pulled up outside the house.

But they weren’t alone.

A black SUV with federal plates arrived right behind them.

Two men in dark suits stepped out and walked straight past the local officers.

“Rebecca Whitfield?” one of them asked.

I nodded weakly.
