The clerk didn’t even look up at first. “Name again?”

“Coleman. Mark Coleman.”

She tapped at her computer keyboard. “Yep, Room 14. Down the hall to the left.”

Thanking her, I walked out of the lobby and followed the outdoor corridor. The motel rooms opened directly to the parking lot, like a scene from a old movie. The air was cool, and the only sound was the distant hum of traffic on the highway.
