‘How is Uncle Henry’s dog doing, honey? I hope everything is okay now,’ I asked sweetly.
William’s face flickered just for a moment. Then he smiled. ‘Oh, he’s doing great. The old dog is doing just fine. And Uncle Henry is feeling better, too.’
I felt a chill run down my spine. He had walked right into my trap. He had forgotten his own lie about a cat stuck in a tree. He was so entangled in his web of deceit that he couldn’t keep the threads straight.
I smiled back. ‘That’s wonderful. I’m so glad.’
But inside, my heart was ice. The man I had loved for twenty-five years was a complete stranger.
I barely slept that night. Every moment of the last three years replayed in my mind: the missed dinners, the canceled vacations, the lonely evenings when I stared at the door hoping he would come home early just once. All of it a lie.
