I don’t remember hanging up.

I remember throwing clothes into a bag with shaking hands. I remember the highway stretching out black and endless in front of me as I drove nine hours straight, gripping the wheel so hard my knuckles ached.

And I remember praying, for the first time in decades, that I would not be too late.
