I held his hand through all of it. I talked to him even when the machines were the only ones answering.

“Do you remember Miller’s Pond?” I whispered on the fifth night. “You danced with me in the rain. You promised you’d love me till the day you died. Well, I’m holding you to it. You hear me? You’re not allowed to break that promise yet.”
