I took a photograph of that moment: Michael holding Sophie, her head resting on his shoulder, the castle shimmering behind them. I still have it. It is my most precious possession.

We spent the day exploring, slow and careful. We rode the gentle rides—It’s a Small World, the carousel, the train that circles the park. Sophie waved at every character like they were old friends. We ate ice cream at noon because she could, and she chose a giant swirl of vanilla and strawberry that dripped down her chin.
