I Hired a Teen to Mow My Lawn, Then I Found His Secret

The first time I saw Cody, I never imagined he was keeping a secret that would turn my quiet summer upside down.

I had only lived in my new house in Fairview, Ohio, for about a month when he knocked on my front door.

It was a warm Saturday afternoon, and I was still arranging boxes in the living room.

The knock surprised me, because I had not met many neighbors yet.

When I opened the door, I saw a teenage boy standing on my porch.

He looked about fifteen, with sandy hair, a thin build, and a face that seemed older than his years.

He stood beside an old push mower that looked like it had been repaired more times than I could count.

He wore a faded gray shirt and a pair of worn-out sneakers with a small tear near the toe.

His hands were calloused, and there was a quiet determination in his eyes.

‘Good afternoon, sir,’ he said. ‘My name is Cody. I live with my mom at the mobile home park down the road. I’m trying to save some money before school starts. Do you need someone to cut your grass for the summer?’

I studied him for a moment.

There was something sincere about him, something that reminded me of my own younger self when I had to work hard for every dollar.

I asked him how much he charged.

‘Twenty-five dollars,’ he said. ‘I can do it right now if you want.’

I looked at the lawn, which had grown a little too tall since I moved in.

‘Tell you what,’ I said. ‘I’ll pay you thirty. You do a good job, and you can come back every week.’

His face lit up, and for a second he looked like an ordinary kid with an ordinary dream.

‘Thank you, sir,’ he said. ‘You won’t be disappointed.’

And honestly, he was right.

Cody turned out to be one of the hardest-working young men I had ever met.

He always arrived on time, usually in the late afternoon when the heat was still strong.

He never complained, not once, even when the Ohio humidity felt like a wool blanket.

He never rushed through the job, and he never tried to leave early.

By the time he finished, the lawn looked better than I could have managed myself with every tool in my shed.

The edges were trimmed neatly, the clippings were cleaned up, and the sidewalk was always swept.

Most weeks, I paid him a little extra because I thought he deserved it.

I would watch him from the window sometimes, seeing how carefully he guided that old mower in straight lines.

But there was one thing about Cody that kept bothering me.

He looked strangely familiar.

Every time I saw his face, I felt certain I had seen him somewhere before.

At first, I thought he might be the son of someone I knew from church, or a boy I had passed at the grocery store.

I went through old memories like pages in a photo album.

I thought about the neighbors I had met in my old neighborhood in Dayton.

I thought about the stores I used to visit when I still lived in Columbus.

I thought about family photographs, local events, and the faces of children I had seen at community picnics.

Nothing matched.

I even pulled out an old box of pictures from my closet and searched every young face.

But Cody was not there.

Eventually, I convinced myself I was imagining it.

I told myself that all young people share certain features, and my mind was simply playing tricks on me.

For several weeks, everything remained normal.

Cody came every week, worked hard, collected his pay, and left with a polite nod.

He never asked for anything more, and he never spoke about his personal life beyond small talk about the weather or the lawn.

Then one afternoon, my plans changed.

I had left the house for what I thought would be a long afternoon of errands.

But a meeting was canceled, and I arrived home several hours earlier than usual.

As soon as I stepped out of my car, I could hear the low rumble of a mower in the backyard.

I walked around the side of the house, expecting to wave at Cody.

The moment I stepped into the backyard, I noticed Cody’s mower.

It was sitting in the grass.

Still running.

But Cody was nowhere around.

I stood still for a moment, listening to the engine sputter and hum.

A strange feeling crawled up my spine.

‘Cody?’ I called out.

No answer.

I walked toward the side yard, my footsteps slow and careful.

‘Cody?’ I called again.

Still nothing.

Then suddenly, the door to my detached garage opened.

Cody hurried outside, his chest rising and falling as if he had been running.

I stopped immediately.

My heart gave a hard thump in my chest.

‘What were you doing in there?’ I asked.

His face changed.

For a split second, he looked genuinely frightened.

It was a look I had never seen on him before.

He recovered quickly, but I had already seen it.

‘The door was already open,’ he said quickly. ‘I was really hot, so I just stepped inside for a minute to cool off.’

I stared at him.

His explanation did not sit right with me.

I had only lived in the house for about a month.

I had never used that garage.

Not even once.

And I always kept it locked.

Every single time I left the house, I checked that lock myself.

I was absolutely certain I had not left that door open.

Still, I did not accuse him.

I simply nodded and said, ‘All right.’

Cody finished mowing the lawn, collected his money, and left.

But I could not stop thinking about what I had seen.

Why had he been inside the garage?

And how had he gotten in?

That night, I checked the garage door twice.

It was locked tight, just as I had left it that morning.

There was no sign of forced entry, no scratch on the latch, nothing to explain what had happened.

I stood in the dark for a long time, trying to make sense of it.

Maybe he really had found the door open.

Maybe I had forgotten to lock it after all.

But in my heart, I knew that was not true.

A few days later, I was shopping for groceries at the local market on Chestnut Street.

I was pushing my cart down the canned goods aisle when I noticed a familiar face across one of the aisles.

Cody.

At least, I thought it was Cody.

For several seconds, I actually questioned myself.

I blinked and looked again.

Because the boy standing across the store looked completely different from the teenager who arrived at my house every week wearing faded shirts and worn-out sneakers.

This Cody was dressed in expensive designer clothes from head to toe.

His shoes alone looked like they cost more than everything I had paid him all summer.

He wore a nice watch that caught the light of the fluorescent bulbs overhead.

His clothes were spotless, and they fit him perfectly, as if they had been tailored just for him.

Even the way he carried himself seemed different.

He stood taller, more confident, more polished.

Nothing about him looked like a kid struggling to earn extra money while living in a trailer park with his mother.
