It was from my own mother, Dorothy Bennett.

My chest tightened, but my feet kept moving with the crowd.

‘Your sister and I are going to Las Vegas,’ the message read.

I read it three times while travelers moved past me, laughing and talking about vacations.

I did not reply.

That explained the triumphant email.

They had seen the money appear and believed they had won.

They celebrated too soon.

I stood in my nearly empty kitchen.

The money was safe.

‘What did they use to authorize it?’ I asked.
