Karen fell to her knees. “No! You can’t do this. I’m the victim.”
The officer cuffed her. They walked her out through the crowd, which booed her.
I stood there, holding my ticket again. It was actually in my hand. The crowd surrounded me, patting my back, congratulating me.
One older man said, “Son, you deserve every penny. Don’t let anyone take it from you.”
I cried.
Later, at the station, I got the ticket back officially. The clerk signed a statement. I deposited it in a bank vault.
Karen was charged. She’s looking at up to five years. Mark is divorcing her. He told me he should have seen this coming.
But the betrayal changed me. I can’t sleep. I constantly check the lock on my safe.
Susan and I have started therapy. I know the money can bring good things, but I’ll always remember the day my own family tried to destroy me.
