I frowned. “A lover?”

The detective, a gruff man named Harrison, rubbed his chin. “It gets stranger. We also found fetal remains near Emily’s pelvis.”

I felt the blood drain from my face. “The baby?”

“No,” he said quietly. “That’s just it. There were no infant remains at the scene. Only some very tiny, very early fetal bones. They were not developed enough to be the near-full-term pregnancy she was supposed to be carrying. It’s as if she suffered a miscarriage early on… and then, later, she gave birth.”
