Something slid past my leg under the water. I didn’t dare look down. I just swam harder, praying with every fiber of my being. The bank seemed impossibly far. My legs felt like lead. But then, miraculously, I felt mud beneath my feet. Slippery, sucking mud that tried to swallow my shoes, but it was solid enough to push against. I scrambled through the dense reeds and cypress knees, cutting my hands on sharp grasses, until I finally collapsed onto the mucky shore, chest heaving, tears streaming from my eyes.
