Kathleen’s name lit up the screen.
My sister hated mornings.
She never called before sunrise unless something terrible had happened.
My chest tightened as I picked up the phone.
‘Kathleen?’
For a few seconds, I heard only a running car engine and a turn signal clicking.
Then she said, ‘Sarah, Dad died last night.’
Dad stopped chewing and looked directly at me.
I stared back at him, then quietly put the call on speaker.
‘When?’ I asked.
‘Sometime overnight. Arthur found him.’
Arthur Price had been Dad’s closest friend for forty years and had once owned the Price Funeral Home in Asheville.
