At 6:30 on a freezing Thursday morning, my sister Kathleen called to tell me our father had died during the night.

There was only one impossible problem.

Dad was sitting three feet away from me at my kitchen table, wearing his navy flannel robe, drinking fresh coffee, and stealing bacon from my plate.

He had stayed with me for the past two days, and every morning he did the exact same thing.
