I leaned forward.

“And last night? Why were the babies with her?”

Mrs. Atwood sighed.

“The night nurse, Miss Carver, called in sick around eight o’clock. I tried to find a replacement, but no one was available. I couldn’t stay because my daughter needed me, so I left after the day nanny went home. I thought the babies would be fine until you returned—they had been fed and changed. But something must have upset them.”
