Let me take you back, because you have to understand what that moment meant. My daughter, Emily Anne Mitchell, was born on June 12th, 1990. She had a full head of dark hair and those incredible eyes from the start. Her mother, Beth, and I had been high school sweethearts. We married young, full of hope, but the road got rocky. By the time Emily was two, our marriage was over. The divorce was final on December 1st, 1992. I got weekend visits, and I held on to those like a lifeline. Every Friday, I’d pick her up, and we’d go to the park, or she’d sit on my lap while I worked on my bike in the garage. I taught her the names of all the tools. She’d call a wrench a “bendy thing.” I’d tuck her into bed at night and kiss that little birthmark, and she’d giggle and say, “Do it again, Daddy.”
