In the far corner of the basement, hunched against the stone wall, was a figure. A woman. Thin, so terribly thin, in a filthy floral housedress that hung off her bones. Gray hair, matted and unkempt, fell over her face. My mother. My beautiful, vibrant mother. She was sitting on a stained mattress on the cold concrete floor, and her ankle… her ankle was wrapped in a heavy iron chain, bolted to a water pipe.
